Here are some pictures of the first farm I bought in Mound City, Kansas.
This is the "small" barn at the front of the property. It is made of cement-covered brick, and the woodwork is all solid oak.
This picture shows the location of the "big" barn, just to the west of the "small" barn. This is a pole barn that sits against the east side of the 20 acre pasture. This picture was taken facing west.
This picture is a panaramic view of the farm, starting at the back of the "small" barn (facing south towards the Linn County Fairgrounds) to the front of the pasture (facing north towards the KDOT mixing and storage area).
This is the pond in the pasture. This pond is about 10 feet deep, and has lots of large fish. Even during the longest droughts, this pond has water in it - it is probably fed by an underground spring. In addition, the pond contains freshwater clams.
This pond was also involved in one of the largest environmental hazard spills in Linn County, Kansas. In June of 1997, three years after I bought this farm, the tanks in the background of the previous picture spilled a large amount of tar-like "emulsion" into the ditch that feeds into this pond. The resulting contamination cleanup cost the county about a million dollars.
This picture from the Osawatomie Graphic shows the cleanup of the pond in progress. The back of the "big" barn can be seen in the background.
